Workrate marks just latched on when they were looking for an alternative because it was the second biggest company in the world and big shows had good matches. Those fans left when AEW started.
I don't think they paid much attention to the smaller shows though. Your regular Japanese fan doesn't necessarily care about fancy move after fancy move. They want to see their equivalents of Orton, McIntyre, Miz, etc. They want to see old legends like their Cenas and Lesnars pop up.
Big matches happen when they're built up, just like in WWE. There's always story behind them.
New Japan has always been more WWE than AEW.
