That was wrestling in general. I watched a couple of 8-Man and 10-Man tag matches from 80s New Japan today and it's insane how much more believable they look compared to similar matches today; even matches from Japan.
It also helps all the wrestlers worked like they were trying to kill each other.

Wrestlers used to be carny stuntmen who took it as a matter of pride to actually kick the shit out of each other while using liquor and drugs to numb the pain long enough to put on a good show because they loved the rush they got when they made the fans cheer and they didn't give a fuck whether they were killin each other in front of 30,000 people in a stadium or 300 people in a community center because just getting in the ring was its own reward.

Wrestlers today are gymnasts who do everything they can to avoid being hurt and want to be famous first, wrestlers second, and the moment any of them get enough star power to call some shots they immediately start pussifying their already pussy matches to ensure they get as few bumps as possible while they wait for a phone call from Hollywood.

I like to think this way, if you take for example the top 10 biggest wrestling 'stars' of today that are not guys like Brock or The Rock but guys who became relevant in wrestling in the last 5-10 years and transport them back into the 80's or 90's, could they become big stars?

The speed racing through moves, the overuse of pin attempts, the constant back and forth of being on offense and defense without any thought or progression, the running away from your opponent to do a momentum move. been watching a lot of mid-late 90s WWF and Vince would throw on a random mexican midget match every couple shows just to kill time and let Sunny dress slutty as a guest ring announcer or timekeeper. The thing that stood out most was that the matches are paced and feel almost exactly like a modern wrestling match. midget#1 does a flippy move which midget#2 no sells and does a flippy move, midget#1 does another flippy move and then midget#2 kinda sells by rolling outside. If its a tag match midget #3 and #4 repeat this. The spots are all slow and obviously setup because they're fucking midgets, and the crowd will cheer a little bit for the flips but sits completely silent most of the match. The state of modern wrestling is literally copying joke time filler matches from 1997

Godwin's were a hoss tag team who did opening or midcard matches.
Headbangers were basically 90s R-truth. They got a pity title run for a couple weeks just because they were kinda over.
Scott Putski had like 3 matches and destroyed his knee and vanished

Wrestling really only started being extremely shit recently. WWE matches up until maybe 2017/18 were pretty decent. My biggest complaint is how hokey it all looks, a lot of the moves are very obviously cooperative, a lot of the big spots are blatantly preplanned and they don't look like they happen naturally, just looks like they're walking through a script e.g. guy hits clothesline in the middle of the ring on his opponent, opponent sells it by crawling to the turnbuckle and the guy who hit the clothesline just walks to the other turnbuckle to do a big splash without even seeing if his opponent actually got to the other turnbuckle. The whole match unironically feels like one of those signature comeback spots people like Orton and Cena do, which was horribly contrived and gay but was excusable since the rest of the match was fine.

In hindsight I really have an appreciation for the old school philosophy. When trainers would beat up or stretch new recruits, they would have an understanding what pain would be, also so many wrestlers would have a jobber run early in their career in the territories where your responsibility is to be on defense 90% of the time and make your opponent stuff look good. The positive of that is when they do get a push, they have some skill, knowledge and muscle memory of making their opponent stuff look good

Now everyone comes in and Day 1 learn a back bump and forward roll and by Day 2 they are already working on their offense and their signature spots. None of these guys felt like they ever been in a fight or felt any discomfort

Eddie vs Dean in ECW is the patient zero of current wrestling. Didn't watch it at the time but seeing it now it was so boring much like today wrestling. Unnecessarily long, spot wrestling with "ooh and aah" and both these guys moments. I thought it was boring, illogical and "performance art". They were less annoying in WCW

Hawk no-selling is definitely gay though. It was especially awful when The Road Warriors were no longer draws because at least they were drawing dimes when they were no-selling. Wrestling schools used to protect the business by weeding out the wimps and letting the tough guys prove themselves. Hanging in there while getting stiffed and being a ragdoll jobber for 2 or 3 years while still showing up because you're dedicated to your craft: making wrestling look real. Learning how getting your ass kicked looks and feels like in reality.

Wrestling schools in the last 25 years started turning into cash grabs. Marks lined up in droves wanting to learn how to become the next Shawn Michaels and the lazy pussies who trained them catered to them. Kept these geeks with no athletic backgrounds happy by letting them learn muh superkicks. They couldn't handle the hazing and the stiff sell, so they taught them offence instead. Blame the lazy piece of shit trainers who didn't care to protect the business.

They wrestled a lot faster back then. Modern matches are a slog to get through. Guys are actually less athletic today and have worse cardio. Old school matches, they were going at 100 mph for the first 10 minutes, and it made sense for them to have rest holds and what not, and for a guy to actually be fatigued in the match.

Matches today are just finisher and signature move spam.
