Sexy (Sekushi) is a loanword from English, but is used completely differently and with different feelings surrounding it. Say you take your kid to a Joshi wrestling show and your kid says, "I want to be sexy like Tam!" In English this is terrible and disgusting, and you don't bring your daughter to wrestling anymore because whores are influencing her. In Japanese this is cute and precocious and shows that your daughter is mature or something and wants to be like an adult. Or something, I'm not really sure, my japanese is still terrible, but it's a thing you notice.
I've never heard the thing about JAV stars on the red carpet though. I always heard the gravure idols that kept the bikini on and only showed buttcrack got to go on to fancy careers in wrestling and newscasting, and the gravure idols with their tits out had to transition to JAV because no one else could take them. And that JAV was for sluts but gravure was respectable.
