It's Marufuji's last big run. He's likely hanging up the boots at the house end of the year so he's just doing the matches he wanted to do.
Marufuji is an icon in Japan. So the story is kind of like what Ric's last run in WWE was. An icon coming to it's end. Ric fucked it up by not actually following through with ending it. But Marufuji will not come back once he retires.
I actually kind of expect him to even announce after the match that he's done. But he might not. He might do a few more after this. It's actually beautiful that WWE is letting this happen as people wanted this match during AJ's Bullet Club run but never got it. So it's a big deal.
