Trying to think of an example to prove this claim but even "straight" wrestlers were gimmicked by Vince in this era.

Stupid nerdy things have been the most popular, mainstream things for as long as today's teenagers have been alive. Marvel superheroes dominated pop culture for like 15 years straight and they're still omnipresent even after most people got sick of them. Video games are bigger than Hollywood. Your normie ass coworkers watch anime every day. Wrestling fits perfectly in that culture.
You know what's really becoming niche and uncool now? Music. The biggest artists today are from the 90s and 2000s. The top rappers are 40 years old. The hottest rock bands among teens are Deftones and the Smashing Pumpkins. People are priced out of going to concerts. Taylor Swift is the most famous celebrity on Earth and her fanbase exists in a self contained bubble.
