>>15088404It's true, and it's complicated. Japanese has 3 different writing scripts, but also sources words from Old Chinese and modern Chinese. So the orthography is a COMPLETE MESS, which means it requires a tremendous amount of time and focus just to write/read/speak their own Japanese at a very high level - their high level vocabulary isnt in Latin/Greek like it is for Spanish, German, etc, theyre borrowing from Chinese. That leaves little overlap with English or other indo-European languages. Add in word order (Verb last), particles, geographic isolation, limited naturalization of immigrants - lots of peculiarities that make it very difficult to master English as a native Japanese speaker.
Just as Americans are proud to speak English and nothing else, so are Japanese. It's the strangest thing. Difference being English is a global language of finance and education, and Japanese is the anime language.
