WWE's always been weird about announcers. They want someone who is well-spoken, generic, replaceable, lacking any personality and not that knowledgeable about wrestling, but someone who is knowledgeable enough to get through week to week.
It's really different than what other promotions look for and I'm not sure I really get the reasoning behind it. Meanwhile, their best commentators ever have never really fit that role.
