Here's an alternate view: It was necessary for the industry. The thing that makes these kinds of spots tense is the idea that the person is doing something risky and it could go badly. If things always go perfectly and the guy walks away fine every single time, there would be no tension or excitement, and the audience wouldn't be as invested.

Guys like Edge breaking their legs every so often gives the rest of the wrestlers some leeway so they can do things more safely.
