Another point, is that he would highlight his foe's shortcomings, or stated another way, he would try to destroy their own self-confidence.
This long-winded roundabout way of telling Will kys is low-quality in contrast to telling Darby that the wrong person died in the car crash, for example.
So yes, MJF was genuinely good, but this is an example of him deviating from what made him good.
