You cannot divorce the two. The wrestling is the main event, the be-all end-all, the climax you are paying to see. The story is the hype, the background, the context that give meaning to what you see in the ring and which gives weight to each move. Ideally you want to have an exciting and engaging match which fulfills or exceeds expectations and serves as a satisfactory pay-off, but you need the story to get there, so that there is a reason to care who wins, a reason to feel with the character when they're selling or get a rush of excitement when they hit an amazing counter.
Anyone who watches just for the story is better off watching anime and anyone watching a grappling exhibition is better off watching a real combat sport.
