The show has a lot of issues, primarily because 1) Tony insists on having longer than necessary matches, 2) Tony insists on having pinfall or submission finishes 98% of the time, and 3) Many AEW top stars don't want to wrestle on Saturdays (Bucks, Okada, Hangman, Mercedes, MJF, etc). So you have all these people fighting for a very limited amount of peak viewership minutes, and Tony's solution is to take matches that should go about 7 minutes and stretch them to 14, and it just doesn't work. It's not working. It hasn't been working.
Hikaru Shida is not going to quit the fucking company if Mercedes beats her in 6 minutes, but that's what should happen. Instead -- and you can bookmark this thread -- the match will go at least 10 minutes through a commercial break, then have some weak ass run-in AFTER the finish from Britt Baker. Then the two will stare each other down. Maybe Baker is handed a mic and gets to say 2 sentences and then call her a bitch. Riveting stuff.
What we SHOULD get is Mercedes opening the show, grabbing a mic, talking some shit, Hikaru interrupts, grabs a mic, tells Mercedes the fans are sick of her shit. She talks too much and doesn't fight enough, and that she's a coward who can't wrestle without her bodyguard around to cheat. Kamille gets sent to the back. Mercedes beats her in 6 minutes, Britt jumps in from the crowd and attacks, Kamille comes running out, Britt gets out of the ring just in time and taunts Mercedes/Kamille while walking to the back with Shida. Then you have Kamille w/Mercedes vs Hikaru w/Baker set up for next week. Stuff writes itself. (Tag team match would be even better but Tony is *OBSESSED* with his new toys not losing matches, even tag team/trios matches, until deep into their runs)
You can do this up and down the card to shave off 20-25 minutes to make room for another match (PAC vs AR Fox/Mortos/?) + a hell of a lot more storytelling and character development.
