Cody doesn't represent the typical American way, his character is a twist on that where you try your hardest and everything doesn't work out. The culmination of that was him not giving up, starting over and eventually achieving what his Dad, the American Dream, wanted.
That aside, how strange is it to accuse anything that would be a representation of America or patriotism as evil? That sounds like a more twisted viewpoint with a negative agenda.
