AVGN was popular too but he came from an external site and was popular before YouTube. Plenty of copycats of him though back in those days.
Worst part is I actually used to watch the nostalgia critic and not in an ironic laugh at Doug Walker way I actually took what he was doing seriously. Makes me laugh thinking about it.
Also the first "let's play" I ever watched was retsurprae where they just watched longplays and bullshit over them. They didn't even bother playing the games LOL.
You know now I think about it youtube pretty much was just newgrounds with real videos in a way. So I guess it makes sense it took off.
