Corporations who would happily grind them into meat slurry if they thought they'd make a profit from it. Personally i think it comes down to the death of local communities, social groups and social media making it infinitely easier to mark yourself as a fan of x y or z before any other trait, and then because epople get social validation through that it becomes a larger and larger trait that a person latches on to.
