He truly is one of the greatest to ever do it. The man himself said he credited JR with helping him understand how to tell a story through commentary but that smells like forced Vince burial speech to me. Joey excels in ECW at calling matches. There are borderline stinkers between Hack Myers and Tony Stetson in 94 that are unbearable puke fests (even though the Shaw of ECW is over as shit so the crowds into the match going crazy for Hack) but Joey always knows how to make a match watchable, but even better, the guy loves mat wrestling high spot maneuvers, so he knows when to shut up and just hit reactions because the action is that good. Joey calls a PPV by himself and it never feels like he misses the action. Can always put over the guys, always put over the story, always so damn likable on screen. I truly believe he’s one of the greatest based off his work in ECW alone, and I’ve watched all of 97-98 and 94-95 so far. Oh my god and Irish whip have him cemented I. Wrestling culture, but he did truly actually earn it because he’s really talented. Everyone shits on Excalibur here but listen to a Joey Styles cal between Psychosis and Rey Mysterious JR. he’s naming every single move accurately, any shitting on Vince and Bischoff for just cheaping out and saying what a maneuver. I think there’s a lot of connections between AEW and ECW because they’re both smark shit, but that’s why I like it, and Joey himself is a huge HUGE mark
