Kevin was physically abusive towards Nancy but they had kids and more to the point, both had the boomer mentality that marriage was for life and that you had to make the best of a bad situation if you were in a shitty marriage where abuse was going on.
There has long been corner gossip that Kevin wanted out of the marriage but knew that his history of abusing Nancy would be weaponized against him in a divorce, plus knowing that a divorce instigated by him would cost money and leave him with the chance that he would getting a shitty deal when it came to child custody/visitation, especially if him hitting Nancy came out at court.
So he wrote a cuckold storyline with Nancy cheating on him with Chris Benoit, and forced them to travel together and be out in public together to sell the storyline. But his overall goal was to make Nancy and Chris fall in love for real, which in turn would make Nancy be the one who filed for divorce.... which Sullivan would go along with so long as he got favorable shared custody agreement with their kids. Nancy marrying Benoit shortly after also eliminated any alimony issues Kevin might have had.
