It's this. His reputation in the US was tarnished for years due to WEE propaganda. But the man has been doing this for 3 decades plus all the while reaching out to international promotions, making appearances and doing matches anywhere he could, and willingly humiliating himself to pop the crowd. He's got massive amounts of respect worldwide.
