He makes the same mistake that every other promotion makes. This soured many OG fans who were sick of the influx of ex-WWE talents. It was bad for the men, but it was particularly bad for the women, with firm fan favourites like Shida, Statlander, Bunny, and Riho getting shoved to the side for the likes of Saraya, Soho, Storm, and now Mercedes. This wouldn't be too bad, but there is a clear double standard at play, with the former WWE talent getting more time and chances. Whenever homegrown AEW talent gets a chance, they're either made second consideration with little to nothing to work with (Shida), or they're the lackey of Baker (Hayter), or a transitional champion to a former WWE talent (Shida/Willow), or they're stuck in limbo.
