Every release since 06 has had people hating on the games direction. The only reason people buy those shit games is because there's no real alternative. I stopped buying the games after 09', tried 12, and never touched them again. Absolutely terrible games. The controls are wonky as fuck and the gameplay is a complete snoozefest. The controls from HCTP are 1000x better than the modern shit.
It's like Madden. They completely ignore what people want because you have no choice but to buy them. AEW fight forever is just bad. Even if the gameplay is way better than the WWE games.
