Austin is a classic example of what happens. He whined and moaned that he couldn't get a break, got held down etc. Then when he got on top, he turned around and did the same things to other guys that he moaned about guys doing to him.

Austin's major drawing power is what really saves him. That and his injuries causing his run on top to not last forever.

Otherwise, Austin would either be remembered negatively in the same vein as 2000s Triple H or WCW-era Hogan.

Austin had PPV losses against literally all of the relatively big Attitude Era guys. (Rock, Undertaker, Kane, Foley, Vince, Triple H, Angle, Jericho)

Obese marks think draws have some sort of obligation to put over shitters, probably because they've never accomplished anything in their lives and have no understanding of what it takes to get to the level somebody like Austin got to. The truth is winning fake wrestling matches doesn't get you over, being an entertaining character who connects with the crowd does. Austin himself got mega over after a loss to Bret.

Remember Taboo Tuesday (or Cyber Sunday) where Stone Cold was going to WRESTLE Jonathan fucking Coachman to get JR his job back (in storyline) and then they told him he was going to lose and he said fuck no. Then they added Batista and put him against Vader, Coach, and Goldust. Dropped the JR stip and just let him win. That’s the sort of idiocy that Austin avoided.

booking foolishness aside, i legit think that the taboo tuesday/cyber sunday format can come back in this day and age as a fun special episode on weekly tv. put it on nxt and shawn will find a way to make it entertaining.
