You do things first, and then every once in a while something good might happen as a result of your actions, which means you're going to automatically pursue those results once again. Doing things for people is a good example of that, because the results can be immediate, such as eliciting an emotional response. Now that you're a piece of shit, what stops you from trying all sorts of things and see what happens? It's not like you've got some reputation to lose.
