And instead of lessening their financial risk, they paid more money than they ever had before on this show--a show that besides the Star Wars name had absolutely zero legacy to carry it. It was set during a time period that's never been done, with zero returning characters. They saw that and gave it twice the budget as the Obi-Wan show, which was able to bank off prequel nostalgia.
So yes, while the Acolyte was a new show, they already had a pattern of in-house projects to go off of.
