Basically the interest of the public vanished when all of the ABC governing bodies appeared and "unified titles" became a thing of the past beyond rare eclipse like events where everything lines up.
You can't compete with UFC when they have one belt per division and clear cut champs.
Nobody gives a fuck who the IBF heavyweight champ is because there's also a fucking WBC heavyweight champ and a fucking IBO heavyweight champ and so on and so forth.
