The smark darlings used to be badass territory tag teams and Japanese psychos who would beat the shit out of each other and now the smark darlings are flippy shitters and meme wrestlers. How do we go back?

MMA killed traditional hard hitting pro-wrestling. The guys who would do the matches you're talking about gravitate towards doing MMA now.
That pretty much just leaves us with the workers we currently have. Wrestling companies can only book the wrestlers they have, not the wrestlers they wish they had.
It's a problem but I don't think it can be fixed honestly.

This. Smarks used to trade tapes to get as much wrestling as they could and know about as many wrestlers as they could. Then the internet opened up a lot with media sharing and being a smark shifted into knowing about all the backstage happenings and who was going where and things like that. Then that became easy enough for anyone to know through message boards and social media. Fast forward and now being a smark has become about pretending to have some sort of insight to the actual business side of wrestling and going on about ratings and network deals and if a single one of them has access to this information or knowledge of what any of it actually means. They buy into Dave pushing the importance of it because they're literally his target audience he's marketing to. It's all about wanting to come across as the 'smartest' and the false sense of self importance that ties with it

Yeah, I don't mean to imply it holds true across the board. But my theory is there's a lot of talent that went the MMA direction that might have been out hard hitters now.
Throw in industry concerns about injuries to boot and it all just lends itself to working softer. And with that being the case, maybe the flippy guys just stand out better.
I'm not making excuses for it, mind you, just spitballin'.
