The Bucks/Hangman spent Punk's entire tenure trying to undermine and piss him off - and once they got their wish and he flew off the handle, they played the "you have to be on your best behavior or we won't work with you" card, played games some more and drove him out of the company.
The Elite never wanted Punk in AEW. They wanted the appearance of wanting him there, so the smarks would stop bugging them about it. But they never wanted him there, soaking up THEIR limelight and filling THEIR leadership role.
