AJPW continues to be a hot product relatively speaking. NOAH feels like a rudderless ship currently with its booking and its poor attendance relative to investment speaks to that.

Ren Ayabe getting a push is the only black mark on this years All Japan booking. Aoyagi's run has been very mid. Anzai had a fantastic year though.

If it weren't for their lack of financial backing i would say they are poised for a major breakout having Kento still in his prime, Anzai, Honda, the Saitos, Aoyagi. The junior division even has some guys too like Tachibana, Hayato, Doi, and so on.

The problem with AJPW, and this is something they share with almost every other wrestling company in 2024, is that they are producing completely formulaic and heatless stuff. It's "competent" in that everyone can hit their moves right and escalate on cue near the end to give the impression that something is actually happening, but it's genuinely bad, because it's fucking empty. There's nothing to get invested in other than the prospect that some of the young guys might get better as performers. But that's not a story, that's just watching people get their reps in.

Personally im on board with the claim that this is the worst era ever in Japanese pro wrestling. The talent pool is shallow and we are maybe seeing the first generation of diminishing returns on wrestler ability. As opposed to seeing the skill level rise generation upon generation. Match construction philosophy has gotten really stale which doesn't help either. Now personally as far as stories go almost no one in Japan really does it well. New Japan for instance benefits heavily from the audience filling in the blanks and they run with it. It works for me personally. Niether NOAH or AJPW are doing this. If I wanted to watch for a melodramatic story I'd just watch American wrestling. I prefer when things are somewhat more grounded. I don't care for DG which is probably the closest comp to a WWE you are gonna get in Japan. Maybe I would feel differently if I thought the level of work was top tier instead of being passable.

It just feels so stagnant across the board in wrestling for me. I know a lot of people like WWE right now, but I'll just never be able to get into the WWE style. It's so slow and soulless.

Really feels like covid and AEW existing has hard stagnated wrestling. The indies are deader than dead right now. Think about it. Are you hearing about any hot indie acts right now? Tag Teams, singles? There's just nothing there right now.
And yeah Japanese wrestling isn't much better. The best one for me is All Japan, but they're not really doing anything super interesting. It's just competent. In the same way Impact was at various points over the years.
I wish NOAH would get it together as historically I love it, but they've been a mess for so long that it'll never happen at this point.
Also the talent pool is very shallow as well.

I know that in my shit country the local wrestling scene has never been hotter than now. Since covid lockdown ended in 2021ish, promotions have been selling out show after show (400-500 tickets) and occasionally dabble in shows with 1000 people sellout.
