His character was over because he was an Olympic gold medalist who was willing to act like a clown. Nobody would want to watch him if he was bad at fake wrestling because then the character would fall flat. He'd just be Gable Steveson doing comedy bits

Nah Kurt was legitimately funny and charismatic. It was funnier because he was a legitimate athlete, but he was very self-aware and instinctively knew how to work a crowd. He even made Benoit's personality work on a tag team, and Benoit had all the personality of wet cardboard.
