Despite wrestling having been silly at times throughout history it has always strived to make it "real".
When you were a kid and felt tha Yokozuna, Undertaker and Doink The clown may have been real characters and debating in school if it's real or not, it's because WWF managed to "brainwash" you just enough to plant seeds of doubts on if it's real or not. When you saw Kane, Micl Foley, Rock, Steve Austin and Triple H in your teens, you kinda knew that it was fake but never really reflected on it because the wrestlers feuding took it 100% seriously. When you saw ECW and AJPW and FMW-tapes as an adult, and seeing Stan Hansen decapitating heads with Lariato, you begin having doubts again if it's all an act
But AEW make no effort taking itself seriously and that kind of energy comes through the screen. You feel they're phoning it in or acting as if they fully know that what they are doing is all an act.
At no point in the history of pro wrestling until AEW (I don't count indies because they are not big enough to influence the viewer and the business on a bigger scale) did anyone disrespect the sanctity of pro wrestling. That's why AEW is so toxic and evil. It's as if you invite some piss troll to a DnD session and that person is the only one acting "meta wink-wink", mocking at times, parodying, bending some rules arbitrarily and so one. It ruins the immersiveness for everyone else.
