I started watching a year or so ago, beginning from kotr 1996, watched all the way to summerslam 1998 but haven't watched a lot since the rumble this year because I got too invested in cody's run and have just been keeping up with current wwe since then so don't get a lot of time for anything else. 23 btw.

What’s the reason why mcmahon didn’t get Russo back or try to during 00s? It goes to shit quick late 99-all 00s. 01 was ok until the invasion era and 02 was boring. Late 98 made me envy the people that got to see it live, the bang 3:16 episode had a fun crowd

when i used to watch back old raws and nitros, i would skip the ppvs and just watch the shows. because the ppvs are just boring ass fake fighting matches. now the shows are just boring fake fighting matches too. modern wrestling is unwatchable

I'm 28 and haven't bothered watching full episodes.

I did however go back and watch some random segment clips on YouTube these past couple years to see what the hubbub was.

I've got mixed thoughts. Sure they were pretty entertaining in a sense, but they also were largely crass and lowbrow.

I've been watching from late 97, the night after Survivor Series and I'm up to one of the 99 RAWs just after St Valentine's Day Massacre. There's a lot of groups in this time who get frequent TV but never get talked about at all. The Ministry of Darkness stuff is already really questionable too given who the higher power ends up being.

I did anon, I started from KOTR 1996 and really got into it once the race wars got canned and Bret started his crusade against America.
1998 was also an amazing year and then we here comes 1999, the show goes full Russo with crucifictions and fake backstage spy camera segments and it really spoiled the show for me, I'm a few weeks past Jericho's debut and while I can feel the show improving (Hardy's are starting to get more TV time), that period from like February 1999 to September 1999 took so much wind off my sails, maybe I'll pick it up again one of these days.

Which episode are you on? Going through 1996 WWF and abstaining from modern wrestling made me enjoy the hell out of the show once it got good in 1997, it's like taking a break from a drug you use every day to reset your tolerance to get a really good high the next time

I’m a little over 30 but only got into wrestling at the tail end of the MNW. Despite how horrible it was in retrospect, I actually favored WCW because i was so used to tuning into the turner networks to watch the NBA, plus my parents heard WCW was more family friendly so they gave me less shit for watching it. But yea, I’ve gone back and watched the rest of the era from both feds and it so clearly outpaces anything that came before or after in wrestling that I’m basically just a casual fan now and probably will be forever.

Born in '83 and I was the prime audience for the product when the Monday night wars was in full swing. It was the best wrasslin'. We had it so good when they were trying to put each other out of business (With the exception of anything Russo touched). When WWF bought WCW and it was bra and panties matches and goofy bullshit the product suffered. It's comfy going back and watching the old stuff.

I watched it sparingly when it was actually happening but not much as I was a little young and my parents discouraged it. I went back and watched it retrospectively probably about 10 years ago, and am slowly working my way through it again. Certainly the only year in any companies history that I can say I was compelled to do that. To be fair, the fall of 2000 is pretty average and I’m about to reach that point so I may stop. The rest of the year holds up spectacularly well

WWF 1997 programming is widely considered to be the single best year in televised wrestling history.
It's must-see even today, especially if you know about the backstage drama.
For the story's sake you can start with Survivor Series 1996, when Bret came back from doing a TV series and Shawn stopped being the Janetty he became with the world championship belt.

Shawn+Trips DX>Trips+Jabronis. Wish Funk did more when he was there. APA was based.

My favorite part about that whole era is how everybody, from the jobbiest curtain jerker to the main eventers, all had their own storylines and were always doing something. It wasn't like now were they focus on one or two main stories and then everyone else is an afterthought. It made everyone feel like they were an important part of the show and made moments like Mankind working his way up the card and into a title shot even that much more significant. It made me give a shit about Bradshaw which made his stuff in the RA era that much funnier. It made Scotty2Hotty and Grandmasta Sexay over with me despite being nothing more than a dancing gimmick for two guys dressed as special needs kids.

I was alive when it aired but didn't start watching regularly until 99. I'm trying to rewatch everything from 96 onwards but I ended up skipping loads of it. WCW is miles better but there's still too many matches not worth watching. Currently in March of 97 and things are heating up but I'm struggling to watch more than 2 hours a week. Too much kino to watch and vidya to get through. Tempted to just stick with WCW and ECW and then skip ahead to 2002 because I don't really remember anything from 02-05 and as good as 2000 was, I don't think I can sit through the Invasion again

One thing I will say, is even a broken down Piper is more engaging than 99% of the talent around then and now. Him, Austin and Sid are my main guys at the moment
