If he just counted to 3 then Drew can't cash in for a triple threat which means Punk couldn't screw him and allow Priest to retain. It also means Seth wouldn't get screwed out of the title by Punk, killing his involvement in the feud and for things they're setting up now. As for Priest, he wouldn't get betrayed by Finn during his title match at Summerslam and that night had two JD betrayals.
So in a nutshell, a bunch of stories and guys were saved because the ref did the wrong thing. If it was just a 1v1 and nothing else, then the ref would get buried at best or fired at worst.
