His initial gimmick is literally introducing himself, because he has a "le funny name" because Vince was shitting his pants over it. Eventually he gets to Batista, tries to introduce himself, gets bombed. Batista then prattles on to Randy, but what he SHOULD have said first was "You're Dolph Ziggler, right? Now you can add an extension. Dolph Ziggler, the man who got his ass WHIPPED by Batista!"
THEN you can use that to build his character. Have Dolph attack Bat after his feud with Randy, make him grab a mic and say "I'm Dolph Ziggler, the man who made Batista his BITCH!"
There's your gimmick. Dolph Ziggler, the man who/X to Y. Then you can give him the moniker of "The Man", "The Man Who Does Everything", "The Man of Many Talents", etc. Hell, you could even have a catchphrase with him every week going, "I'm Dolph Ziggler, THE MAN..." and the crowd says that first part, then he says whatever after. It writes itself really. I guess it's a bit old school because it's not a flashy or colorful gimmick, but I think it could've worked.
Don't know much else about Ziggler beyond where I'm at currently, all I know after is that he eventually cries on stage about not being good enough and then fizzles out, so I'm guessing he just turns into another smarmy heel for a while.
