the older you go the worse it gets, I think
from the ending of 2017 up until today you can find pretty much every single interview/vtr with english subs and also events with english commentary

I haven’t watched it in awhile but the English commentary used to be so bad I’d prefer to listen to the Japanese. Since I don’t understand it, it can’t be cringy enough to ruin the match.

Unless your watching hustle or that weird sports entertainment experiment new Japan did in the mid 2000s. Japanese wrestling stories are told entirely in the ring. They are tales of struggle and over coming that break language barrier because the relay on the universal human trait of empathy.

On the actual broadcast, or only on YouTube? I remember watching before and the video packages before matches had no subtitles.

usually, all the broadcast stuff is in japanese and the video packages don't have subtitles
sometimes the commentary team will translate the live promos as they happen, but they're always uploaded to YouTube with subtitles afterwards

I think that kind of sucks. It wouldn't be hard to just put the subtitles on the broadcast. Putting them on YouTube is good but I don't want to feel like I have to do homework to watch wrestling. It's a little thing, but it would make a world of difference in terms of getting me invested in their show.

NJPW is the easiest Japanese promotion to get into storywise. There's plenty of english commentary, subs, and videos that tell the backstory to the factions and major figures. Really unless you're wanting to watch a really obscure promotion in Japan most have some level of gaijin friendly accessibility now.
