Heatlessness isn't good. Cena was both loved and hated by millions, he got a ton of dueling chants, often there was the high pitched feminine childish "let's go Cena" followed by the masculine booming "CENA SUCKS," but most everyone was involved and invested in the character. That has NEVER been the case with this forced meme.

Because John Cena didn't need to be carried by 2 superior wrestlers and his push wasn't nearly as forced. He spent about 3 years as an undercard singles guy, his first wrestlemania was as a throwaway segment on Sunday Night Heat even.

Cena was a natural promo guy. Roman didn't cut a decent promo until the 2020's. He's still a boring wrestler that only works with his family.

Even if you hated Cena he wasn't bad enough that you wanted to stop watching because he put people over and generally stayed contained on one show. Roman basically held the entire WWE hostage.

Not really. Cena also had meaningless main event matches over the WWE and World Heavyweight champions regularly. He held the WWE hostage even when he wasn't the world champ.

Post 2016 Cena doesn't count. Cena (and Gaytch) buried Brock in his first match. Brock was a monster of the month level. They needed to break Taker's streak to restore Brock.
