Fans would speculate about the matches they wanted to see from the pool, everytime a wrestler was announced that they would partake it would be exciting, wrestlers could use the angle in hope they fight each other, old foes fight, new angles, you get funny match-ups like Lesnar vs Tajiri, you get midcarders stealing the show with le workrate. the booker can play with expectations etc. I'm not that familiar with New Japan but I know they announce the G1 participants like it's Smash Bros and I always thought it was kinda hype.
