Idk about soccer but aside from a few marquee players the nfl and college football generally use the last name and numbers of a player since its what is on their jersey. Unless you are the quarterback or youve made a big play its pretty uncommon to hear a first name in football.

It's not even a matter of it being a sport or not. Personal branding is plain way more important in pro-wrestling. You don't have to go full Vince McMahon and be a total crazed sperg about names, but there's no reason why AEW should have three different fucking Adams at once. Especially when only one of them's real name is even "Adam", which he himself never even used as a wrestling name until heading to AEW, and the other two's real names -- Austin Kirk and Stephen Blake -- actually sound like good wrestler names already.

You can mehate any confusion about similar names with nicknames, monikors etc. But AEW simply gives random guys like 12 unique names each a d only guys who already have unique names. Worse is that the aew nicknames are all painfully generic and meaningless. That's the bigger issue.

Someone tunes in to aew. One guy has a name, another guy has a similar name. They are wearing similar gear, they do similar moves, they say similar things. They have no identity. You can't expect a new viewer to understand what's going on in aew at the best of times, but no effort is put into producing a show with identity and logic. You convince someone with no knowledge of aew to watch the show and they might see Darby and pick him out but everyone else is generic.
