Shelton wasn't built up enough for the win to mean anything for Swerve, plus fans like the Hurt Business so they didn't want to see that. It was done as a poor excuse to bring Lashley in, and was counterproductive to the actual storyline where MVP is claiming he is a better manager and Swerve should be with him, as the guy he had confidence in lost and now he has to bring in another guy. Fans are willing to look past this as the want the Hurt Business to succeed.
Either don't have the match, or have the (heel) manager cheat, or use Lashley as a distraction. If you aren't going to push Shelton because he was midcard in WWE, despite this being like a reset for him, then either don't have him involved in a top faction in a capacity where he's getting beat so early, or don't hire him.
