My theory is that although Internet was available it wasn't every household in early 2000's or even the half way point so it wasn't reaching people's every day and phones due to cost and bandwidth. That's more to do with the fact that TV isn't really the monolith today like it was back then. There was literally just less shit to watch in the 90's/Early 2000's so pop culture was a lot smaller.
