I can agree with this. I have zero interest in how much money Randy Orton pulls in for TKO jews, but he still doesn't get the credit he deserves as an in-ring wrestler. It's honestly his biggest strength, especially now that he's a grizzled vet and probably the best he's ever been at putting a match together. I watched the Gunther match and loved it.
It's depressing that people think that because wrestling is scripted, the only valid way to discuss it is in terms of business metrics. And they think that's the "adult" way to view wrestling as though they're not just laymen pointing at graphs they don't understand as a substitute for actual substantive critique. I think this attitude comes from people who only know sports and no other form of popular culture. They only know to judge value of entertainment by looking at box scores. I'd rather discuss wrestling as a form of acting. And Randy is great at it. He'd still be great even if no one knew who the fuck he was.

if you're going to compare a wrestler that works for the biggest wrestling company in the world and one that works in a different wrestling company then drawing arguments based on revenue, merch, tickets are a false standard because the wrestler that works for the bigger company is going to win every time. It's a lazy argument. So if you're going to debate like an adult you have to compare then based on wrestling ability as that's the most suitable metric available. So if you're going to argue who is the better wrestler, Randy Orton or Will Ospreay then you have to go with wrestling ability, match quality, etc. But WWE fans wont use those metrics because they go for the easier argument.

I'd say it actually does. Being able to execute spots and being able to wrestle a match aren't the same thing.
The people who are great at having matches still stand out as being great. Like Orton, Gunther, Cody Rhodes or Bryan Danielson. The reason someone like Will Ospreay's ring work is so divisive isn't because of his explosive style, it's because he still struggles to get from point A to point B without the guiding hand of a veteran like Danielson or some of the guys he worked with in Japan. And I think a lot of current hyper-athletic NXT people (mainly the women) are going to come up with the same problem.
