He was talking about how he had lost himself in his obsession and his mother felt that he was depressed and destructive. It was a babyface promo full of vulnerability from a man whose gimmick at the time was an underdog with a huge heart who wouldn't quit and has his passion consume him. People in the audience were in tears if you go and watch, and it got him more over in the long run.
If this promo happened today by Mox or Danielson in AEW or Punk or Sami in WWE then it would be hailed as a work of brilliance.
But because Bret memes on it and sheep will always follow the consensus out of cowardice, it has become a punchline
