The most distinguished wrestling journalist of the '70s, Bilvis Wesley, who Meltzer idolized and studied to learn how to correctly critique the ability of each wrestler and the quality of their matches, was high on him. I forget exactly how many 5 star matches Wesley awarded Bruno, but there were more than one and, last I heard, Meltzer recognizes them as legitimate ratings.

I do remember there was a Sammartino vs Gorilla Monsoon match that got 7 and 1/4 Stars on the Wesley-Meltzer 5-Star scale. That's considered the best wrestling match in human history thus far. The high point of the match was a bear hug that was held for 38 minutes straight. Will Ospreay hasn't had a match that good yet but he's come close.

What's funny is that a lot of people that watched wrestling in that era agree that Bruno was fucking dogshit. You gotta remember this is the same era where Harley Race and Dory Funk Jr were working 60 minute classics every night, while this hairy italian mongrel just locked on bear hugs for 20 minutes.
