They wanna have a success story, but aren't content with simply being successful. They want everyone to know they struggled and came up on simply because of sheer willpower and perseverance, when in reality they mostly knew or met the right people at the right time, and got everything handed to them.

there are many examples of people who struggled for a majority of their life, likely due to their parents and still came out the other side successful.

Sure, but they are usually more humble about it. They don't go around reminding interviewers how they only had 5 bucks and an used condom before they became successful, when in reality they were usually in decent homes no worse than middle class.
