WWF was starved of main event options by this point, and Michaels wasn't reliable (and would soon disappear from the company within a few months). But they had the guy - Austin - and his Wrestlemania title challenge was all set up, but other than the Undertaker there was no-one else. That's why I don't think its so strange that they planned a feud between Austin and Dr Death, because there were so few main eventers for Austin to work with. And we almost had Warrior filling the gap.
