Ospreay had a surprisingly good start in AEW and was taking that place, but it feels like the momentum died out of nowhere. I think it might have been the Fletcher thing. And now that I think about it the Ospreay situation kind of mirrors what happened with Kenny. Ospreay was supposed to be god's gift to wrestling but he jobbed to Swerve, lost his chance to win at a once-in-a-lifetime Wembley show in his home fucking country, and now he's a nobody. Kenny was supposed to be god's gift to wrestling so he was given a storyline where he was all washed up, constantly trying to regain his touch, and he gradually became irrelevant. What the fuck?

Everyone wanted Cleaner Heel Kenny and they gave us Chickenshit Heel Kenny instead. I understand that Kenny has a "comedy side" to his wrestling, but man it really didn't translate well into the product. It's such a weird tonal shift to what people were expecting from Kenny as a world champ that I suspected the gimmick was meant to be a shot at someone in the industry. Either way, it blew chunks and killed a lot of the hype for him as the top guy.

He should be on the path to being 3-4x champion, if any company needs the belt to cycle, it's AEW. Names like Copeland, Danielson, Christian, Samoa Joe, they're all world champions on a US nationwide stage. Ospreay, Okada, Swerve are not.

Get the AEW world title on the non-WWE alums, take it off after 2-3 months (like with Swerve), keep it rotating. Tell whatever story it takes to get the point across that WHERE THE BEST WRESTLE isn't a tagline, it means something. MJF's reign did irreparable harm imo

Few things in wrestling have pissed me off the way Kenny's 2019 did. You don't take someone who has buzz and garners attention from everyone in the industry, when you're launching the first major arena/network TV rival to WWE in 18 years, and book a story that literally is "Yeah this hot new alternative promotion headed by the most raved about guy outside of WWE? Oops he's actually burned out and washed up and not what he was". Look, it was good for the cameras but it sucked. Most of the matches save for like two were even noteworthy. Combine that with the fact that the AEW belt was seeing some turbulence itself and the belts were devalued, moreso the AAA and Impact titles. It wasn't until the Christian match where the Belt Collecter gimmick was killed and the AEW title picture got more interesting and Kenny finally got some fresh challengers. The comedy still persisted but one head of the beast was still hacked off, never to recover.

More of a recovering smark. I do try to look at wrestling from the perspective of storytelling instead of the athleticism. The match means nothing if there is no investment into the emotion going in. I was born in the dying days of Memphis wrestling. I missed the majority of it, but there are plenty of great angles to watch on youtube. Those guys would literally just punch and kick for a whole match. Occassionally you'd see an armdrag or hiptoss, but not much athleticism. Yet, in the late 70's into the mid 80's they would sellout the territory every week. Why? The cheesy storylines were great! Check out the Jerry Lawler feuding with Tommy Rich and Austin Idol that ends with Lawler losing a hair vs hair match. The whole angle is on youtube and it lasted for months. Good stuff.

His entire run was bad pre-tapes that were just one of 400 friendship stories on aew TV that had no logical beginning or end. He did almost nothing as champion, the highlight was a TV match against Christian for the TNA belt that Christian won. Omega's whole title reign was about wearing pointy shoes and the Bucks saying he betrayed them, only for them to turn heel suddenly and Adam Cole to debut, immediately get mogged by Danielson and then pretend that there was a 2 year build to crown Hangman - in reality he was doing nothing most of the time and peaked as a silly drunk guy. It paid off with Hangman having an even worse title reign doing even less and climaxing with bringing backstage drama to live TV and causing years of shit flinging that damaged the perception of the company in ways that we're never resolved.
