As Prince Puma he didn't speak, he had a cool look. And he had banger matches to boot.
Taking his mask and expecting him to talk exposed his cringe personality and voice to the world.
He would not have become a job guy as Puma. He easily could have been NXT Champion. And he would have remained in the upper mid card zone and likely been in the IC and US title picture all the time. There is even a very very slim chance he could have gotten a short world title run as Puma with a manager.
The difference between Puma & Ricochet is massive. But he's a narcissist and wanted people to see his face.
