The only reason they've been turning record profits in recent years is that they've figured out how to squeeze every last penny they can from the shrinking viewership by throwing a ton of advertisements on everything and by structuring their shows in a manner that people are afraid to tune out from the commercials lest they miss something

You could throw in the PPV buys of random B shows from that era and they out draw 2/3 of AEW's shows. Either people forget or weren't around, but wrestling was massive in 97/98/99 to the point networks were trying to expose wrestling as fake as if everyone wasn't already in on it.

Every country in the world has TV stations and many of them broadcast wrestling. Then there's the tweets and tiktoks and a variety of other shortform content. Then there's streaming and illegal streaming and downloading.
Worldwide, tens of millions of people watch wrestling every single week.

Attitude era was previous to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, etc. was all about tv ratings and everything is different now.

My point was they've found ways to squeeze as much money out of every viewer as possible and it's detrimental to the product. Yes, money is the name of the game but you can't tell me it's better now than it was when it was less commercialized.
The benefits of "making more money" don't flow down to viewers. They just help shareholders buy a second yacht.

WWE makes their profits from media rights deals (which includes all of their legacy content as well btw) and from working foreign markets that are starved for any wrestling content, most notably Saudi Arabia. WWE does a good job today milking their whales through merch sales too, but again this includes legacy properties and it hasn't translated to WWE's mainstream popularity nor viewership nor live attendance rates at the same level as the WWF Golden Era or Attitude Era. I suppose you could say that WWE has increased viewership from third world shit holes like India, but we both know the only viewers that ever mattered live in America and maybe Canada.

You literally have to be a zoomer with a broccoli perm to think that short YouTube clips are anywhere near the same as viewers tuning in to watch a one to three hour wrestling event or attending live events. And that says nothing about the relevance of pro wrestling in pop culture, which today is nowhere near the level it was at during the 80s Golden Age nor the late 90s Attitude Era, when pro wrestling was literally everywhere.

Viewership has shrunk over the years since the 2000s. Whoever uses Youtube and streaming is lying, alot of those youtube views are of clips from years ago.
