A lot of those failed idols realize that it's probably their last shot at becoming even a little famous outside of more unsavory work so they put their hearts into being good at it. And a lot do turn out better than doubters could imagine. Throw in the fact that they're cute gets people emotionally invested in them and it's actually sort of brilliant.
