He had this delusion that pro wrestling was a viable martial art and that he could send guys with just NJPW Dojo pro wrestling training and have them compete with dudes like Crocop and Fedor in MMA shoots.
If you think about it, it's absurd. He's sending guys who learn how to take safe back bumps against guys who have been training actual combat styles for over a decade -- of course they got BTFO

He's fundamentally very sound because NJPW simply doesn't train shitters but by that virtue, so is almost everyone else. I've never watched an Umino match that I didn't think someone else could just be substituted into (except for Ren Narita because he's MEGA shit)

He's a very plasticky, copy/paste type of wrestler. Not shocking considering his excursion took place in the UK full of shitters who also fit that description. A good wrestler with no distinct traits of his own while also ripping the surface level aesthetics of guys like Tanahashi, Moxley and Naito in a very unnatural way. Shibata was in NJPW before 80% of the western fans who later got into NJPW knew it exists, so unless you are asking about Japanese fans, the reason you don't see it in English is because they just accepted that entire crop of guys immediately when Dave and others said to do so to seem cool and fit in, they weren't actually following Shibata in like 2004.

Surface level aesthetics doesn't just mean what he looks like. Nothing is original in wrestling, the problem is that he's an ugly, unrefined mismatch of different wrestlers traits and none of it gels together or says anything about himself. He wants the Moxley traits so hes Shooter Rougnneck Death Rider coming out the crowd, but also wants to be the Tanahashi-like ace so he's wearing ugly bright colors and spending 4 minutes slapping hands and waving his glowstick with a face that looks like he's lost and looking for his parents. Then he finally gets in the ring and wrestles a very good match but his style overall is very 'alright', nothing in particular to take note stands out besides all the moves he stole but the moves aren't much of an issue because modern wrestling but still (Tsuji is more of an issue here). What even is his personality? Ren is built like a fat Kanemaru and acts like a fat SHO but I still understand who he is better than Shota. Yuya was a bigger geek than Shota up until the G1 and his entire style is purposefully meant to be basic, but his G1 work showed how well that pays off in how he lays out a match and carries himself to the people. He showed more snatching the mic with a torn triceps after a ruined main event and gassing himself up than Shota did all year giving shit post-match promos and still being a geek. Shota's working an angle around a fucked ankle but refusing to take time off and it's just feels like whatever.

I forgot his name but one of the inoki guys went to fight one of the gracies in their gym, went about as well as you'd expect. I love inoki but that Ali fight went to his head. Laying on the floor and throwing leg kicks works when the other opponent doesn't know any martial art except boxing; it never works anywhere else. The thing with Shibata, especially after coming back, was that he was good at making you believe he was willing to kill himself in the ring for the glory of pro wrestling. He believed in this so much that he worked himself into a shoot and almost did it.
