2002 started off so promising, Mania was a banger that year, and then in the middle of the year the Fed just sorta shits the bed. Austin walks out, the nWo push is stalled cuz Hogan is over and turns babyface, Nash tears his quads, the belt changes hands like 6 times over the summer, etc. The brightspot was the debut of Lesnar and HBK coming back at Summerslam. Rock getting booed in the main event against Brock was wild.

Then in the fall HHH's reign of terror began.

It's crazy cause they had maybe the best roster in WWE history. A mix of veteran megastars plus young guys that could go. It's just Vince's booking was terrible. Also didn't help that the boom period was over and WCW fans gave up on wrestling instead of flocking to WWE.

I think a lot of it has to do with Vince winning against everyone else. The territories never stood a chance, the steroid shit only made baby waves and WCW was the only promotion to rival and surpass WWF. But after beating them and the post nut clarity sinks in over the following year and it's like okay what now? I've beaten everyone and everything.

Wrestlemania 18 and the build to it was really mediocre. The Rumble that year was great tho. I sometimes see people place 2002 as one of the best years in WWE history and it baffles me. RAW sucked pretty much the whole year and Smackdown either sucked or was just mediocre until the Smackdown 6 got rolling in ~August. I think the Smackdown 6, Rock-Hogan and Summerslam 2002 being one of the best PPVs ever make people forget that most of the year was crap. Plus most years since the late 2000s have been even worse.

I prefer mid card face DX of 98-99 to main event heel DX of late 97-early 98. The DX gimmick works better in the mid/upper-mid card. Though this judgement is me going back and watching after the fact because I didn’t get into wrestling until 2000. Plus, mid card face DX had Billy Gunn, and Billy’s gotten me through some tough times. I have especially fond memories of when he turned heel in Paul Wright.

NWO was better, but Shawn Michaels slurring out some promo because he's on painkillers and somas is based.

I never liked HHH DX because it felt too jokey. Shawn knew when to cut it out and get serious. Like, he didn't play that shit against Austin and when he played it against Bret, it made sense, because Bret was the ultimate SRS wrestler so that shit got under his skin.
