WCW originally wanted to do the whole NWO thing in the summer of 1994, shortly after Hogan joined the roster. Scott Hall was up for jumping ship, but the company had strong reservations about the potential fan reaction to Nash due to his incident a couple years prior. WWF was willing to keep it under wraps so long as Nash remained on the roster but there were fears they would leak it if he was prematurely poached.
Ted Turner himself spent upwards of two million dollars of his own money (in 1992 money!) covering up the story and reframing it as a simple rape instead of consensual. Obviously, we know how it all turned out but it was poised to create a huge mess for Kevin Nash as well both World Championship Wrestling and Turner Broadcasting.
