The Trios belt works in New Japan because it's a touring company. Fans don't watch every single show they do. Smaller shows are multi-man matches, and multi-man matches can be fun but are sort of mindless. They grow old really fast.
A trios belt is sort of a "champions of the multi-men matches" title. It makes sense when it's something you're doing all the time.
They're house show titles.
It doesn't work at all, however, when you're a TV show on the air multiple times a week that, because no one wants to see regular multi-man matches, doesn't do them often. Then it becomes its own thing, only no one wants to see it because tag matches are better anyway.
New Japan's trio's belt doesn't even belong on its own bigger shows. There's a reason it wasn't a high priority for defending at Wrestle Kingdom this year.
